A Storytelling Family Session at Home
Home: the place where their real life unfolds. As a Boise family photographer, I love documenting families in their own homes, where routines, laughter, and connection naturally come to life and tell the family’s unique story. This in-home storytelling session was a beautiful mix of cozy indoor play and backyard adventure — a perfect reflection of this family’s everyday magic.
We started the session inside their cozy living room, where the warm afternoon light poured through the windows and wrapped everything in a soft, golden glow. The kids were eager to show me their toys and they immediately won me over as they climbed, cuddled, and tumbled into their parents’ arms. The playful nature of these session leads to unscripted laughter, the wild energy of toddler play, and the quiet snuggles in between.
One of my favorite moments was watching big brother hang upside down between his parents’ legs, laughing with his whole body while his little sister looked on with wide-eyed curiosity. These fleeting, silly moments are the ones that will mean everything years from now — the ones that bring back the feeling of this season of life, not just how it looked.
As the session continued, the family settled into slower, quieter moments too. Reading the bible together, is something they do regularly and so to capture those moments captures their family authentically. The kids played with their toy kitchen and brought me their “creations”. It’s always amazing to see how quickly kids move between bursts of energy and tender calm, and storytelling photography allows space for all of it.
After capturing their life inside, we headed out back to one of their favorite spots: their old blue truck. This truck wasn’t just a prop — it was part of their family story. Hoping in for trips around the neighborhood is part of their weekly routine. Father let son sit in the front seat as they both grabbed tools to “work” on the review mirror. Mom joined in with baby sis and suddenly it felt like a little adventure was unfolding right in their own backyard. The soft sky, the open air, and the tender moments made everything feel effortless and timeless.
The contrast between the cozy indoor moments and the playful backyard scenes created a beautifully complete story of this family’s everyday life — exactly the kind of story I want my clients to have preserved.
This session is a reminder that your family doesn’t need a perfect house or a picture-perfect location to have beautiful photos. Your story is already enough.
