Boise River Family Photosho

This end of summer family photo session was the perfect session to soak up the warmth of the summer before the business of fall hits. This family session took place alongside the Boise river in Eagle, Idaho. The river is a great spot for families with young kids (especially boys) because there is no shortage of rocks to throw, trees to climb and logs to scale.

Tips for Family Sessions with Kids

  1. Don’t focus too much on trying to get your kids to “behave”. As tempting as it is during the session to keep correcting, “stop running” “sit still” “don’t get dirty”, we aren’t expecting kids to behave perfectly, rather we want to capture the things that really make them kids. They can run, they can be silly, they can be shy, they can cuddle with you, they can explore and pick up things off the ground.

  2. Make sure young kids are well rested, especially if your session start time is close to bedtime. Prioritize a nap for the day and let the toddler nap a little extra long or have a late nap so they aren’t totally spent by the start of the session.

  3. Don’t come hungry. Plan for dinner or a big snack before the session. Set your kids up for success by making sure their bellies are full and they aren’t hangry prior to starting the session.

  4. Release some of your expectations. When the camera comes out, kids can surprise you. Your typically outgoing kid can all the sudden get really shy, your four year old can’t stop flashing a cheesy grin or your baby is just wanting to play in the dirt. It might not be what you expect, but I promise we will still experience something worth capturing.

  5. Dress the baby and toddler at the session. Trust me, you aren’t going to want to risk getting spit up on the baby’s outfit in the car, or a spilled waterbottle all over the toddler’s shirt. What happens during the session is what it is, but at least you will start the session with a fresh outfit.
