Best Boise Fall Family Photo Locations

Fall is one of the most popular times for family photos in and around Boise, Idaho and for a good reason. The city’s trees come alive in bursts of color; reds, yellows and oranges can be seen all around the city. There are so many places to take fall family photos and experience beautiful fall color. Below are a few of my favorites.

Camel’s Back Park

Camel’s back is known for the steep grassy hill that separates the manicured front part of the park from the more natural landscaped trail system behind it. It therefore provides an variety of backgrounds all within walking distance as well as views of the Boise north end if you don’t mind the short hike up the camel’s hump. In the fall you can get great views of the orange, red and yellow trees around downtown boise and the surrounding valley.

Boise Train Depot

Central to the city, the historic train depot provides timeless architecture, views of the Boise Capital building and beautifully landscaped grounds including roses bushes and a pond with a waterfall. For fall family photos, the white and brick depot building provides a warm neutral backdrop and the surrounding grounds have trees with beautiful fall color.

Idaho Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park

The Idaho Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park is a great location for its proximity to the Boise River, the Greenbelt and the red truss walking bridge that crosses the river. The park is exploding with vibrant reds and oranges in the fall and the red bridge also provides a great backdrop for a more fall or winter vibe.

Boise Military Reserve

The Boise military reserve is a network of trails in the northeast section of the city. The landscape is comprised of natural terrain with a combination of tree covered trails and grassy sage covered foothills. If you don’t mind a short hike, you can also glimpse views of downtown Boise and the surrounding valley. Note that this year (2026) some of the area and views may be impacted by a recent wildfire.

Boise State Capital Building

The Capital building’s unique architecture, stonework and steep staircases make a great neutral backdrop for fall family photos. This is also a good option for indoor and outdoor photos or if you want an indoor option nearby to get out of the elements as the weather turns colder. I love the way the sun peaks around the buildings during sunset in the late fall.

Kathryn Albertson Park

Kathryn Albertson Park is probably one of the most often photographed parks in the city, and for good reason! It has beautiful flower lined pathways and ponds, a couple wooden bridges and pavilions and lots of colorful trees. You can spend hours in the park and still not exhaust all of the landscape variety within the park’s boundaries. Keep in mind that the parking lot is relatively small and this park can get busy on nights and weekends during the height of fall family photography season.

Reid Merrill Park - Eagle

Reid Merrill is a small park located near downtown Eagle, ID. Behind the park is direct access to the Boise river greenbelt which comes alive in oranges, yellows and reds during the fall. A short walk will transport you into nature with tree covered paths, tall grassy fields, and rocky river beaches.

Barber Park

Barber park on the east end of Boise is linked to a trail system that brings you alongside the Boise river. With bridges, sandy beaches, and heavily forested areas it makes for a great spot for fall family photos. The sunsets across the river are beautiful in the fall.
